Local History

Halnaker is a tything in Boxgrove parish. The manor was given by Henry I to Robert de Haye, and since 1872 has passed though a number of families including the St. Johns, the Poynings, the Delawarrs and then the Morleys. It now belongs to the Duke of Richmond and is attached to Goodwood Estate.

Halnaker falls within the district of Chichester, West Sussex. It lies on the A285 road 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of Chichester, where it follows the line of the Roman road to London called Stane Street. There is a traditional pub, The Anglesey Arms and a blacksmith’s shop.

Goodwood House is southwest of the village. Halnaker windmill stands 128m up on Halnaker Hill, to the North of the village. A beautiful structure, it is considered a southern outpost of the South Downs. Halnaker is also mentioned in the Domesday Book under Sussex in the lands belonging to Earl Roger.

Charles Audley

After studying Creative Music & Sound Technology at Leeds, Charles launched London based event production company Bassline Productions. Now in their 7th year trading, Bassline are regulars in the events industry, producing jobs for the likes of Coca-Cola, Pol Roger and Bacardi, taking their expertise to places such as Belgium, Nevada, and even a trip to Chequers to light up the grounds.

At the same meeting in 2011, Charles and his colleagues founded Noisily Festival of Music & Arts. From humble beginnings in it’s beautiful wooded valley in the grounds of Leicestershire’s Noseley Hall, Noisily now plays host to some 3,500 guests each July. It has been voted in the top 300 festivals on the planet.

More recently Charles and his sister Laura founded Portobello Tents, using their respective industry knowledge and exceptional interior design skills to create what is now widely regarded as the byword in luxury boutique camping across the industry.

Charles is a keen photographer, avid music fan, and surgically attached to his mint 1989 BMW 325i E30 Cabriolet.

Laura Audley

Laura has a background in interior design, having worked for a number of independent companies, notably Fairfax Interiors in the Cotswolds, and Lord and Vella in Belgravia.

She has an acute attention for detail, and a style that ties in classic British with innovative design, along with contemporary twists and influences from around the world. Laura has the spirit of a Grand Tourer and the sensibilities of a quintessential Brit; fun loving, wine loving, dog loving.

As a result of her design tutelage, the interiors of the Portobello bell tents are more akin to those of a luxury hotel room than classic festival accommodation. Each and every detail has been carefully considered, all the way down to the ingeniously simple design of the hardwood beds and custom memory foam mattresses. As a business owner and designer, her attention to detail is reflected in Portobello’s exceptional product.
